The short answer
Report five things each quarter: share of answer across your priority buyer questions, accuracy of how AI describes you, citations of your own pages, AI-referred traffic, and pipeline from buyers who say they found you through AI. Together they show visibility, quality, and business impact, without pretending any single number is precise.
Key takeaways
- Move beyond vanity metrics like rankings and traffic, which are unreliable in AI search engines.
- Adopt a five-metric scorecard that balances visibility indicators with hard business pipeline data.
- Be transparent with your board about attribution limits and keep your question set fixed for consistency.
Boards ask simple questions. "Is it working?" "Is it worth the money?" AI search makes both harder to answer, because the old metrics only see part of the picture.
Here's how to report it honestly in one slide.
Why can't you just report rankings and traffic?
Because neither captures what AI search does.
- Rankings don't translate. AI engines rarely return the same list twice. A SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai study found the odds of an identical list for the same prompt were under 1 in 100.1
- Traffic undercounts. Clicks from Google's AI features are folded into Search Console's Web results,2 and many AI-referred visits arrive with no referrer and land in Direct.3
- Influence happens without a click. A buyer can read an AI shortlist and visit you a week later by typing your URL.
What are the five metrics?
| Metric | What it proves | Where it comes from | Cadence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share of answer | Whether AI engines name you for buyer questions, and how often versus competitors | Repeated checks across engines and a fixed question set | Monthly, reported quarterly |
| Description accuracy | Whether AI describes your product, category, and audience correctly | The same checks, scored against your one-line description | Quarterly |
| Owned citations | Whether your own pages are used as sources | Sources cited in the same checks | Quarterly |
| AI-referred traffic | Whether answers send visitors | A GA4 custom channel group for AI sources | Monthly |
| Self-reported AI pipeline | Whether AI influences real deals | "How did you hear about us?" field with an AI option, joined to CRM | Quarterly |
The first three show visibility. The last two show business impact. Report all five, side by side, with the trend.
What should you leave out?
- Single screenshots. One answer is one sample. It proves nothing on its own.
- "Position" in an AI answer. The order shifts constantly.1
- Vanity totals. "Mentioned 3,000 times" means little without the question set and the competitor comparison.
There is one external benchmark worth knowing. G2 reported in 2025 that AI search-driven leads convert 40% better than traditional search leads.4 That's G2's own figure, so present it as context, not as a target for your funnel.
Don't overclaim attribution. AI-influenced pipeline will always be partly invisible. Say so on the slide. A board trusts a number with stated limits more than a perfect-looking one.
What does the one-slide version look like?
- Headline: one sentence on direction. For example: "Share of answer rose this quarter; two engines still describe us inaccurately."
- Visibility row: share of answer for you and three competitors, by engine.
- Quality row: description accuracy score and the main error found.
- Impact row: AI-referred sessions and self-reported AI pipeline, with the trend.
- Next quarter: the three actions planned, each tied to a metric above.
Keep the question set fixed for at least two quarters. Changing the questions resets the trend, and the trend is what the board needs.
AI search reporting doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be consistent, honest about its limits, and tied to pipeline.

The bottom line
AI search reporting doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be consistent, honest about its limits, and tied to pipeline.
